Lahir 21 November 1985 adalah seorang artis rekaman dan penyanyi-pengarang lagu asal Mission, British Columbia, Kanada. Pada tahun 2007, ia menempati peringkat tiga pada musim kelima Canadian Idol, dan menjadi bagian dari tur konser Top 3 Canadian Idol.

Sesaat setelah Idol, ia bergabung dengan Fontana dan MapleMusic, dan merilis album pertamanya, Tug of War, pada tanggal 30 September 2008. Tiga tahun kemudian, ia merilis singel baru berjudul “Call Me Maybe”, yang dirilis oleh 604 Records, dan diikuti oleh rilis album mini pertamanya, Curiosity, pada tanggal 14 Februari 2012. “Call Me Maybe” menuai sukses besar dengan menempati Top 5 di Billboard Hot 100 dan peringkat 1 di Canadian Hot 100. Singel ini juga menempati peringkat 1 di Australia, Irlandia, dan Britania Raya. Jepsen bergabung dengan Interscope Records pada tahun 2012.

In Focus: 75 Years Since The Hindenburg Disaster

Last Sunday, May 6, marked the 75th anniversary of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster. The massive German airship caught fire while attempting to land near Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 35 people aboard, plus one ground crew member. Of the 97 passengers and crew members on board, 62 managed to survive. The horrifying incident was captured by reporters and photographers and replayed on radio broadcasts, in newsprint, and on newsreels. News of the disaster led to a public loss of confidence in airship travel, ending an era.

Top: The Hindenburg floats past the Empire State Building over Manhattan on August 8, 1936, en route to Lakehurst, New Jersey, from Germany.

Bottom: As the lifting Hydrogen gas burned and escaped from the rear of the Hindenburg, the tail dropped to the ground, sending a burst of flame punching through the nose. Ground crew below scatter to flee the inferno.

At the time I was waiting tables at Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando, FL. I was a cocktail waitress in the VIP lounge, which is Jimi Hendrix themed. I think staring at music memorabilia all day probably soaked my brain with that vibe. One day as I was leaving to go to work I saw a pile of cassette tapes laying on top of a canvas I had set near my door. I thought, “What ghosts could be hiding in those machines?” I pulled out the ribbon and tried to work with it, making some writing. I watched the ribbon curl up and it reminded me of Jimi Hendrix’s crazy hair, so that was the first portrait I made. I had never sold a piece of artwork. But selling was never that important… discovering is the fun part. by Erika Iris
